API 653 Above ground Storage Tank Inspector

An API 653 Internal Inspection must be inspected by an authorized API 653 inspector. It consists of various elements. The inspector will examine records and checklists of previous inspections that have been completed since installation. They then carry out an internal and external visual inspection, ultrasonic thickness testing (UT), floor plate lap welds and chine welds vacuum box testing, tank bottom examination, and a settlement survey.

How Frequently Must You Inspect Your Above ground Storage Tank?

There are several factors to consider when determining the inspection frequency for storage tanks. API 653, 6.2.1 lists all the factors, including corrosion prevention and corrosion allowances, as well as jurisdictional requirements, product storage characteristics, visual maintenance check results, and operation mode changes.

Normally, inspection frequencies are as follows:

  • Monthly: Personnel knowledgeable about the facility, the tank, and the product stored must visually check the external condition of the tank for Routine In-Service Inspections.
  • Every 5 years: This External Inspection is required as part of the in-service process. The Ultrasonic Thickness Inspection of the shell is included in this inspection.
  • Every 10 years: An Internal Inspection must be conducted 10 years after the tank’s in-service date unless safeguards are listed in API 653 Table 6.1, which extends the initial interval.
  • Subsequent Internal Inspection intervals: Based on the data from the last Internal Inspection, subsequent Internal Inspection intervals will be determined, as well as on API 653 procedures to determine corrosion rates or Risk Based Inspection (RBI) assessments.

Before the Internal Inspection, you must thoroughly clean the tank’s interior to make sure that the tank’s internal components and structure can be inspected. Make sure to remove all products, water, and debris.
