Advanced AE Testing for Aerial Work Platforms

In the domain of elevated work, ensuring the integrity and safety of aerial work platforms is of utmost importance. Origin Endeavours leads the way with pioneering Acoustic Emission (AE) Testing services, designed to meet and exceed the rigorous standards set by AS 4748 and ASTM F 914. Our non-invasive testing method offers a comprehensive evaluation of your aerial platforms, ensuring they are safe, compliant, and ready for operation.

AE Testing Standards
and Compliance

The Australian standard AS 4991, Sections 12 and 15 respectively, cover the recommended procedures for Testing and Verification and Maintenance, Inspection and Repair of lifting devices as defined in AS 2549. An acceptable alternative to traditional visual and NDT surface-based methods of assessment during scheduled Aerial Work Platform Inspections is the use of Acoustic Emission testing.

The Acoustic Emission test method is used to establish the structural integrity of the boom by detecting and locating any acoustic emission source areas. Verification of whether structural defects are the cause of acoustic emission sources may require the use of other non-destructive test (NDT) methods such as radiography, ultrasonics, liquid penetrant, and visual inspection.

This test method consists of applying a predetermined load to an aerial personnel device while it is being monitored by sensors that are sensitive to acoustic emissions (AE) caused by active defects. These acoustic emissions can be generated by, but are not limited to, the following: crack nucleation, movement or propagation in the metal components; or matrix crazing, delamination, or fibre breakage in the fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) material or both.

Limitations and Considerations

While AE Testing revolutionises platform inspections, it’s part of a broader assessment strategy. In certain cases, supplementary NDT methods like radiography or ultrasonics may be necessary to fully evaluate the platform’s condition.
